Tip of the month: How to Know When Your Bottle is Ready

We’ve all done it—held onto a “special” bottle for so long that by the time we opened it… it had lost its sparkle.
Aging wine can feel a bit like a gamble, but it doesn’t have to be.
With a little know-how (and maybe a touch of restraint), you can learn how to catch a wine at its absolute best.
Here’s a quick cheat sheet:
🍇 Varietal matters – Some wines are made to age, others are meant to be enjoyed young. Reds like Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, and Nebbiolo often benefit from aging, while most rosés and many whites (like Sauvignon Blanc) are happiest fresh.
🏠 Storage is everything – A cool, dark place with stable temps (ideally around 55°F / 13°C) and horizontal bottles keeps the aging process smooth. Heat, light, and fluctuating conditions can rush a wine into decline before its time.
🕰 Trust the timeline (but also your taste) – Most wines have a peak window. If you bought a bottle meant for aging, check the winemaker’s notes or general aging guidelines for that varietal. But don’t forget: your taste matters. If you prefer brighter fruit over earthy complexity, don’t wait too long!
👃 Use your senses – When in doubt, pour a glass and smell. If it’s musty, vinegary, or flat, it’s probably past its prime. But if it’s giving rich aromas, balanced structure, and a finish that lingers… you’re in the sweet spot.
Wine isn’t meant to sit on a pedestal forever. It’s meant to be shared, sipped, and savored. So take a peek at those bottles you’ve been saving, and see if any are whispering, "It’s time."
To good timing and great wine – cheers! 🍷✨
